We are three in the family. My father died of an illness. He was 39. I was eight months old, my second brother less than 2 years old, and my eldest brother 8 years old. My mother became also a father the day my dad died. Or at least the dual role she has played began that day.
With sheer gut and determination she single-handedly took responsibilities of both parents. She oversaw the lands taken care of by my dad as a caretaker. She also plowed her share of the land!
Memories keep coming to me the time that she would let me ride the farm implement pulled by a carabao. This would break the soil and get rid of grass after plowing the field. And the times that I would insist holding the plow even at a young age of 10.
The Unique Christmas Gifts for Us Kids That Never Were
I heard from stories that my father was good at making money, among other things. I got to see the motorcycle and bicycles bought during his time. I was told we were one of the firsts to have a motorcycle in our place in the province. Funny but this was a measure of living standard during that time.
And he did not foresee our life once he as the sole earner would be gone. I admire the courage and dedication of my mother, and life would have been better if my father secured our future - his children's future. It should have been paid a little at a time...
