Your age affects the amount you are willing to save regularly. The younger you are, the longer you will save for your retirement, and the lower amount you will shell out. This will help you decide if you want to shorten your saving period or not.

How much savings should one have to retire? Let’s make a simple calculation...

1. How much do you spend now or how much is your cost of living per month? This maintains your lifestyle. Multiply that by 12 to get the yearly total. If you share the expenses with your spouse or someone, get only your share.



2. Multiply the amount in # 2 by the number of years before you retire. If you are 35 years old now and you want to retire when you are 60, you have 25 years before you retire.



3. What is the average lifespan in your family? Or how long do you see yourself living after retirement? If you see yourself living until age 80, multiply the amount in # 3 by 20 years.



4. Subtract any amount you will get by the time you retire – company benefits or pension plan. Now you have how much money is required to retire.
