As a life insurance agent, I help emerging wealth individuals and couples, established families and growing businesses protect what they have built over time. I help clients provide for their family, fund a college education, retire early, and more.
Being an agent has its challenges. I did not dream of being one or end up in the industry. This is also true with most of the agents sharing their stories. Perhaps the idea that life insurance connotes death makes people shy away from this profession.
That is the same with people who need insurance. They have their own reasons for not getting life insurance coverage. Different people have different needs. It is up to the agent to show the need for protection. And I'm proud to be part of Manulife Philippines.
How I Became a Life Insurance Agent
About a year after I bought a policy with Manulife, I realized life insurance could integrate into what I was doing. I was building a web site for OFWs and Filipino immigrants and it came to me to include insurance. This would give more options to Overseas Filipinos about ensuring their family's future. So I went through the process with the help of my agent...
Client Service First
The company trains its agents to put client service first. I learned in the training that there are types of policies for different people. Benefits are not limited to death of the insured as I used to believe. That excited me. Since then, I've been using that knowledge to explain how insurance works.
For example, living benefits provide cash even while the insured is alive. He will enjoy the benefits of his policy even before death. The living benefits can fund the education of a child or retirement. Depending on the plan, these living benefits add to death benefits paid to the beneficiary.
But there are people who mainly want to invest. So I took the training on variable universal life or VUL. VUL is a flexible investment and protection plan linked to the investment performance of special funds managed by the company. The client enjoys the entire returns but assumes all risks. This works like a mutual fund with the benefit of life protection.
Manulife Philippines continues to enhance the skills of its agents. The course on estate planning shows how best to manage the transfer of assets and properties during one’s lifetime or death. This expands my services and helps me reach more people to benefit from what I do.
Life Insurance Agent as Financial Adviser
These training and courses are helping me handle the basics of insurance and financial planning. I inform and advise clients about their options so their ABC are covered - Apparent needs, Basic income continuation and Clean up fund.
The ABC of financial planning shows how best to address a person's needs and priorities. It helps people realize that financial planning is not just hitting the tip of the iceberg.
But these are not enough. I believe learning is part of the business. Keeping abreast of developments that affect clients puts myself forward. These help me advance to the next level - from life insurance agent to financial adviser.
